Careers in Music
Music Therapy – uses music to provide services to people with disabilities. Studies include music and science courses, such as physiology.
Arts Management – promote, develop, manage, and raise funds for art institutions, such as professional symphonies, dance companies, theater groups, or art museums. Studies include business courses (finance, accounting, marketing, management, and economics) and fine arts (music, art, and/or theater.)
Music Merchandising – promote, develop, manage, and market for the recording industry, including new music and music-related products (t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.). Studies include business and music courses.
Music Business – some colleges offer this degree which is a combination of arts management and music merchandising.
Music Education – teaching elementary music or directing band and/or choir in school. Studies include education and music classes.
Music Pedagogy – usually refers to teaching private students. May be combined with other “day” jobs for extra income. Offered as a degree in some colleges, but is possible with any music degree.
Music Performance – the most difficult music career to pursue. A music performance degree is most helpful if pursuing a career in performing classical music. Anyone pursuing a career in music performance should have a backup plan, such as teaching music (either privately or in schools). Many people who want to pursue careers as recording artists will earn their degree in Music Merchandising.
Church Music – leading congregational worship, directing choirs of all ages, planning music programs. Some Christian schools and seminaries offer degrees in Church Music or Music Ministry. Should be combined with another field because many churches offer only part-time positions in Music Ministry.
Piano Technician – tune, repair, and restore pianos. This is ideal for someone who is hands-on and technical.
